New England Running Company Staff: Mary McNulty
Mary started running 30 years ago when she decided to join the track team her freshman year at Wayland High School. She competed in both winter and spring track and excelled as a sprinter and jumper. Mary did not participate in cross country as she could not imagine running so far! She was team captain, league champion in a number of events and placed in states in a number of events her junior and senior year. Mary went on to run at Ithaca College and stuck with the running distances she ran in high school (indoors-40, 300, long jump, mile relay outdoors-100,200,long jump, sprint relay, mile relay). She served as captain for the team and she qualified and competed at the national level.
After college Mary retired the spikes and to the surprise of all that know her, tried her hand at running longer than one time around a track! She built up enough distance to try a 5k race. Mary was drawn to distance running and all that it requires. Over the years she has raced at distances on the road ranging from the mile to the marathon. Some road PR’s include 18:22 (5K), 37:50 (10K) and 3:17 (marathon). Not bad for a reformed sprinter.
Mary says that running PR’s feels great but states that running has given her so much more than that. Running has given her confidence, has taught her true discipline and has sharpened her mental strength. Her favorite achievement, although not a PR, was running the Detroit Marathon (3:29) shortly after being diagnosed and treated for kidney cancer.
