New England Running Company Staff: Derek

Derek began running (without either a ball in hand or someone chasing him) about four years ago. After finding out that his older brother was going to run a marathon he replied, "Only crazy people do that," to which his brother replied, "you should do it with me." Derek disagreed at first, but when his brother appealed to his sense of competition by saying, "are you afraid I'd beat you?" he could not turn down the challenge. The Freescale Marathon in Austin, Texas, was the first race he ever did. He beat his brother by almost forty minutes. This began his love for running.

Derek graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Family Studies. After spending almost six years working at a church in Austin, he and his family (wife Brooke and 2 kids-- a daughter named Haley and a son named Haddon) moved in August of 2005 to begin seminary at Gordon-Comwell to pursue a Masters Degree. He plans to go on to be a pastor.

He continues running, in all of his "free time," and up to this point, has only raced in marathons and half-marathons (PR in his only marathon was 3:46.07, and his best half marathon, in April 2007, was 1:31.24). He currently desires to try to qualify for Boston and plans an attempt for this year.
